AFTER PET EUTHANASIA
What to Say After Someone Has to Euthanize a Pet
The person may be grieving the animal and replaying the decision at the same time. Kindness matters more than analysis.
Do not evaluate the decision
Avoid telling them what they should have done, how long they waited, or whether you would have made the same choice. They do not need a postmortem of the decision from a friend.
Acknowledge the care behind it
You can say, “I know how much you loved her, and I know that decision came from wanting to protect her from suffering.” Keep it gentle and avoid pretending you know exactly how they feel.
Use the pet’s name
Names make sympathy messages more human. “I’m so sorry about Bailey” usually lands better than “sorry for your loss.”
Offer one concrete kind thing
Bring dinner, handle one errand, or simply sit with them. “Tell me if you need anything” is easy to say and hard to act on.
A message you can send
“I’m so sorry about Bailey. I know how deeply you loved her and how much thought went into caring for her. You gave her a life where she knew she belonged. I’m thinking about you.”
KEEP THE LITTLE THINGS
Turn the details into something you can keep.
